$898.9 MILLION AWARDED FOR AIRPORT IMPROVEMENTS GRANTS BY FAA
The FAA announced 448 grants to 477 airports included in the 2021 Airport Improvement Program. The program exists to support aviation infrastructure through funding of airport projects. Each airport is allotted funding based upon passenger volume. The first program to provide federal investment for airport infrastructure was initiated 75 years ago, and more than 89,000 grants totaling $96 billion have been issued to date. Each year, the program receives an estimated $3.2 billion in congressional funding.
This year, over 1,500 grants were awarded, including eight airports in Maryland. Hagerstown Regional Airport (HGR) received $300,000 of funding for taxiway improvements, while Frederick Municipal Airport (FDK) was granted over $4.8 million for runway and taxiway improvements. Other noteworthy grants issued in the Mid-Atlantic were funded to support more than $24 million of improvements at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), $5.1 million of funding at Norfolk International Airport (ORF),
