Business Aviation Seeing Signs
Of Recovery
|
There are clear signs that some areas of aviation have begun to recover from the devastating impact of the covid-19 pandemic on the economy and air travel.
During the month of May, restrictions on individuals and businesses around the country began to be lifted in stages and to varying degrees. Simultaneously, the number of flights began to pick up in the charter, fractional, and general aviation segments, while regional and long-haul commercial flights remained at very low levels. Perhaps not surprisingly, cargo flights were mostly unaffected by the pandemic and continue to sustain a strong level of activity (1).
One of the key variables that will play into the recovery in the U.S. will be the rate at which various cities and regions re-open their economies to near-normal operations. As we know, some states are significantly ahead of others in that regard with Texas, Georgia, and Florida leading the way while the large cities in New York, Pennsylvania, and California are still under lockdown rules. The latter states, along with Colorado, Ohio, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Illinois will be key areas to watch as business activity and business travel resume. The actual timing of those re-openings will play a significant part in determining the overall rate of recovery across all segments of aviation but in particular business travel.
An important element which is of some comfort to note, is that several industry representatives, along with American Airlines CEO Doug Parker, were all very confident in their opinions that the aviation industry as a whole was doing very well, and that the downturn during March and April was entirely due to the pandemic and not any structural issues within the industry itself (2).
Flexjet CEO Mike Silvestro recently told AIN, "In past recoveries, business aviation was one of the last to recover. But this time I think is different - it will be first. I believe that business aviation will become more desirable as a result of Covid-19. I see upside." (3).
Our sense is that as we progress into summer, the overall outlook for business and general aviation is very positive, particularly for domestic and regional flights.
