One-hundred years after opening as a hub for national air mail service, Salt Lake City International (SLC) is celebrating its centennial. Originally Woodward Field, the airport is the nation’s 23rd busiest, serving as a hub for Delta Air Lines and is undergoing a $4.1 billion renovation.
Stephen F. Austin State University to Create Aviation Program
Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas will soon offer bachelor’s degrees in Aviation Science and aircraft pilot certification. The program will start in the fall of 2021. The flight lab will be located at A.L. Mangham Jr. Regional Airport (OCH) in Nacogdoches, TX.
Aviation Groups Request Pause in 5G Rollout
A number of aviation groups, including the U.S military, have submitted requests with the FAA and the Department of Transportation asking the FCC to halt the rollout of new 5G communications technology. 5G bandwidth is close to the frequencies used for air navigation and some groups are concerned the technology could result in catastrophic failures and aircraft accidents.
NASA Moves Forward with Research Projects
Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, NASA has continued to move forward with a number of groundbreaking research projects that will impact air travel in the years to come. Research being conducted by NASA’s flight team include researching quiet commercial supersonic air travel with the X-59 Quiet SuperSonic Technology aircraft, developing technology and safety systems for small delivery drones and exploring aircraft electrical propulsion systems.
Passage of Covid-19 Bill Could Bring Back Thousands of Workers
The $900 billion Covid-19 relief bill could result in tens of thousands of people returning to work in the airline industry. The bill includes $15 billion for airlines to use to pay employees.
Disinfecting Robot in Use at Detroit Airport
A disinfecting robot named Safi has been deployed at the Detroit Metro (DTW) McNamara Terminal to clean surfaces in the terminal. The battery powered robot uses multi-head electrostatic sprayers and autonomous technologies to clean surfaces with an FDA-approved disinfectant material. The robot is manufactured by Pratt Miller Mobility.
Passengers Exit Plane Via Emergency Slide
A man experiencing a panic attack and his companion with their puppy fled a Delta Air Lines flight at New York City’s LaGuardia Airport via the plane’s front cabin door emergency slide as the plane was taxiing to the runway. The man explained he suffers from PTSD and had asked to be let off the flight. The couple was taken into custody.

Airports See Passenger Increase Over Holidays
Despite urging from the CDC to stay home, more than five million people passed through airports during the Thanksgiving holiday week. The Sunday following Thanksgiving saw 1.17 million travelers, the highest rate since March 2020.
Alaska Airlines Orders Nearly Two Dozen Boeing 737 Max Aircraft
Alaska Airlines is the first U.S. carrier to place an order for new Boeing 737 Max aircraft after the plane was cleared to resume flying. The airline is buying nearly two dozen of the planes along with 68 737 Max 9 aircraft.
Ohio Airport Seeks New Fixed Base Operator
The Middletown Regional Airport/Hook Field (MWO) in Ohio is expected to issue a request for proposals for a new FBO no later than March 1, 2021. Currently, Safe Skies is serves as the airport’s single FBO.
New Aviation Coalition Promotes Best Practices to Combat Covid-19
In an effort to share best practices regarding Covid-19 and its impact on the business aviation sector, a group of aviation stakeholders has created the CleanFlying Coalition. The not-for-profit group is committed to promoting passenger safety and implementing best health practices in business aviation during and following the Covid-19 era.
Airport Covid-19 Screening Program Continued Despite Danger for Infection
A program that used federal employees to screen airline passengers for Covid-19 at airports in the early days of the pandemic proved to be ineffective and dangerous according to sources. Yet the White House coronavirus task force continued the program to avoid worrying the public.
Civil Rights Groups Oppose Airport Facial Recognition Technology
A proposed expansion of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facial recognition programs at land and sea ports is being challenged by a coalition of civil rights groups who say the measures are too extreme. The CBP seeks to expand the biometric exit system that collects facial images from non-citizens entering the country.
Frontline Status for Vaccine Requested
Utah airline workers are seeking to be classified as frontline workers in an effort to received Covid-19 vaccinations earlier than planned. A group including Airlines for America, the Regional Airlines Association and SkyWest Airlines sent a letter to Utah Governor Gary Herbert and state and national leaders asking for the new classification.
Study Shows Airport Workers Fear for Safety
A survey by the Service Employees International Union showed that 80 percent of workers at 42 U.S. airports believe their work puts them at a higher risk of contracting Covid-19. Almost 900 people were surveyed, and one in five reported they hadn’t received adequate PPE from their employers.

Southwest Wyoming Regional Airport (RKS), 7 miles east of Rock Springs, has seen continued growth in general aviation traffic. Due to its location central to all Rocky Mountain resort communities, the increase has been primarily in the pre-position and reposition market for hangar space.
In October 2020 construction of the first-of-its-kind Bureau of Land Management's Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT) Base was completed, as was a new fuel farm which doubles storage capacity.
Future expansion plans include an enlarged and modernized commercial terminal, additional transient hangar space, and expanded apron areas.
Vacant land is also available for the development of non-aeronautical & aeronautical businesses or private hangars. Approximately 35 acres is available for aeronautical businesses or hangars ranging from 3,000 to 50,000 SF. Another 50+ acres is intended for aviation industrial businesses such as MRO or manufacturing operations.
