ALASKA AIRLINES TEAMS UP WITH BOXED WATER TO OFFER SUSTAINABLE INFLIGHT SERVICE

Seattle-based Alaska Airlines has announced a new sustainability initiative in partnership with Boxed WaterTM to use plant-based cartons for inflight water service instead of plastic cups. Boxed Water’s cartons are 92% plant-based and the airline expects they will help to eliminate 22 million plastic cups and 32 million plastic bottles on an annual basis from flights. The effort will also save 1.8 million pounds of single-use plastics during the next year.

Boxed Water cartons were first offered earlier this year to Alaska passengers flying in first class and on the company’s Horizon Air flights as a means of addressing the leading contributor to inflight plastic waste. According to the airline, passengers preferred the new option at a two-to-one rate when surveyed. The offering will now be expanded to the main cabin and will also add to their current roster of sustainability initiatives including the elimination of plastic straws and stir sticks. Alaska Airlines has set its sights on net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 with a benchmark of becoming the nation’s most fuel-efficient airline by 2025.
