GSP Breaks Cargo Handling Record
The Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) reported another record-breaking year for cargo handling in 2021. GSP marked an increase of more than 48 percent from 2020 with 96,800 tons of cargo handled at the airport. International freight accounted for 43,800 tons and was valued at $5.01 billion.
GSP opened a 110,000-square-foot cargo facility in 2019 with 17-acres of aircraft parking apron to accommodate up to three Boeing 747s at the same time. The airport has recently begun construction on a 50,000-square-foot expansion of the facility to double building capacity and is scheduled to open late summer of this year. Cargo shipments from GSP served Korea, Japan, Vietnam, and Europe throughout 2021. According to the airport, GSP was ranked number 21 in the country in terms of international freight tonnage handled and was also named Best Airport in North America by the Airports Council International in 2020 in the 2-5 million passenger category.
