United Continues Investment in SAF
TX – United Airlines Ventures and Oxy Low Carbon Ventures (OLCV) have collaborated with Cemvita Factory to commercialize sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production. The SAF will be developed through the utilization of carbon dioxide and synthetic microbes. United also indicated the company has an equity investment in Cemvita Factory.
SAF serves as an alternative jet fuel source and according to United, the airline has invested in more production of SAF than any other airline. The airline will work with OLCV to fund SAF creation at Cemvita and will form a joint venture upon reaching performance targets. The joint venture would help to commercialize the SAF technology and would support SAF plant development and engineering studies. United Airlines Ventures was launched last year to help United Airlines reach its goal of net zero emissions by 2050 through targeting startups, new technologies, and sustainability concepts. According to UAV, SAF possesses the potential to perform like petroleum-based jet fuel, but at a fraction of traditional fuel’s carbon footprint on a lifecycle basis.
