New Solar Roof Unveiled at LaGuardia Airport

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) on April 20 announced the completion of a new solar power project at LaGuardia Airport (LGA). Built atop a parking garage on the west side of the airport, the 3,500-panel project is set to produce 1.7 million kilowatt-hours of solar energy per year and reduce LaGuardia’s energy consumption by 5%. Combined with other Port Authority projects a total of more than 3.5 million kilowatt-hours of solar power per year will be produced.

The new project was completed in partnership with ForeFront Power through a Power Purchase Agreement, under which ForeFront will operate and maintain the system at no charge while charging the airport a below-market rate for electricity for the 20-year term of the agreement. The Port Authority has planned additional solar canopy projects at Newark Liberty and John F. Kennedy airports that will provide 4 megawatts and 12 megawatts, respectively.
