Tennessee Air National Guard Base Opens New Hangar
TN – The 134th Air Refueling Wing of the Tennessee Air National Guard hosted a ribbon-cutting in June for their new $31 million aircraft hangar at the joint public/military McGhee-Tyson Air National Guard Base and Airport (TYS) 10 miles south of Knoxville. Construction of the 57,400 SF state-of-the-art hangar began in 2019 and has a 28,000 SF hangar bay, large enough to accommodate the Wing’s KC-135 Stratotanker and the US Air Force’s newest refueling tanker, the KC-46 Pegasus. In addition, the building contains a 4,600 SF corrosion control section, a 5,600 SF avionics shop, and a 19,400 SF area for general purpose and maintenance shops.
The airport recently reopened its runway 5L/23R after a decade of planning and reconstruction, a $134 million project that represents a major upgrade from the previous runway and the largest in the airport’s history. The new runway was lengthened to 10,000 feet and included a new ILS system, LED lighting, replacing the storm drain system, and relocating a gas main and a municipal roadway. The 134th has been in continuous operation since 1964 and won 16 outstanding unit awards for meritorious service.
