Fly-in to the Nemacolin Airport (PA88) for a Late Summer Vacation in Farmington, Pennsylvania
PA – Have you heard of Nemacolin Airport (PA88) in Farmington, Pennsylvania? Nemacolin Airport was once known as the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort but has since been shortened to just Nemacolin. It was started by Willard F. Rockwell in 1949 with the purchase of 60 acres of forest. 1968, he purchased more land and opened the Nemacolin Trails Hunting Reserve. The property did well for a while, but by 1987, the Nemacolin Trails Hunting Reserve had entered bankruptcy. In the throws of financial disaster, Joe Hardy emerged to be the property’s savior. Joe’s initial desire was to purchase land near a lake or stream so that his daughter, Maggie, could fish, which happened to be her preferred pastime. Instead, he saw an unrealized opportunity in the hunting lodge and bid on the property. He won the auction and immediately got to work renovating the property into Nemacolin’s Woodland Resort. Let’s take a look at what makes the Nemacolin so special for pilots and nature lovers.
Nemacolin Resort’s Amazing History
From 1987 to the early 2000s, Nemacolin was transformed from a hunting lodge and golf course to a 124-room hotel and resort. The name was also shorted to just Nemacolin, and today, guests can enjoy staying at one of five hotels, including the Falling Rock, The Chauteau, The Grand Lodge, The Estates, and The Homes. There are also plenty of activities at the resort, from golfing to shooting and gaming at the casino. What might be surprising is that the Woodlands part of the name isn’t entirely gone. It’s been honored with the Woodlands Club Membership, which grants members the ability to enjoy the 2,200 acres and get discounts on golfing, dining, and overnight stays.
