ABQ LANDS LEASE WITH AMAZON FOR CARGO FACILITY
A proposed ground lease and development agreement between the City of Albuquerque’s Aviation Department and Amazon has been approved by the City Council. The approval allows Amazon to develop a cargo facility at the Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ). The leased land will include a five-acre plot that is southwest of ABQ’s main terminal.
According to the airport, existing cargo space is limited and ABQ is welcoming the opportunity to permit Amazon to complete new development to help build out the airport’s facilities. While the airport previously secured $6.6 million of FAA funding to extend the cargo apron at the airport, Amazon will be responsible for building a 30,000-square-foot facility on the undeveloped leased land. Amazon intends to utilize the new facility to aid its existing warehouse. The Amazon lease will last for a minimum of ten years, but the company can also elect to expand the term to 25 years if necessary.
