CHEYENNE REGIONAL AIRPORT RUNWAY REOPENING DELAYED

A $62 million runway project at Cheyenne Regional Airport has met delays resulting from foul weather and a shortage in the national low-alkaline cement supply chain. The reconstruction project began in mid-April of this year and was expected to be completed in July. Airport officials are now anticipating commercial flight operations will remain on hold until this September.

After serving the airport for more than 50 years, the runway at Cheyenne Regional Airport is receiving upgrades to its lighting, full-depth pavement replacement, and other needed repairs during the runway improvement project. The project acquired a majority of funding from federal sources and a report from the Wyoming Department of Transportation found the airport’s total economic impact to have increased from $160.2 million in 2013 to $205.1 million in 2020.

The weather and cement-related project delays have suspended the airport’s commercial service between Cheyenne and Denver. The route was expected to be popular during Cheyenne’s upcoming Frontier Days rodeo celebration, but will likely not become available again until Labor Day. The airport also supports Wyoming Air National Guard activity, but measures have been enacted to help reduce the impact of the runway project on military operations.
