COS RECEIVES AWARD FOR RUNWAY PROJECT

The Colorado Springs Airport (COS) announced receiving the “Best in Colorado” airport category award from the Colorado Asphalt Pavement Association. COS was awarded the airport’s 2021 pavement rehabilitation project on Runway 17R/35L. This month, the airport received the award at the Colorado Asphalt Pavement Association’s awards program.

The asphalt at the airport is expected to last for two decades and had not been rehabilitated since 2002. According to the airport, the runway was completed in record time and only closed for 90 days during construction with minimal impact to users and tenants of the airport. The construction project utilized 85,000 tons of asphalt, and more than 20 percent of the material was recycled asphalt. The project cost $18 million and was funded by an Airport Improvement Program grant from the FAA. The rehabilitation project did not use local taxes to support construction.
