EARLY NOTICE OF JACKSON HOLE AIRPORT CLOSURE
If you are planning to fly into or out of Jackson Hole Airport in 2022, this serves as your early notice that the airport will be closed for approximately 90 days in the spring to allow for a total replacement of its 6,300-foot runway.
After having been rehabilitated numerous times airport staff says a resurfacing would not be up to standards and it is time for a completely rebuilt runway. Airport Director Jim Elwood pointed out that while the closure will obviously have a significant impact, it is sorely needed. Noting that some layers of the sub-base date to the airport’s initial construction in the 1970s, it became obvious during inspection and engineering studies that a total reconstruction was necessary.
The project will commence in April, running into June, and cost between $45.5 million and $48 million, which will include drainage and collection systems to capture deicing fluids. Some of the removed asphalt will be recycled and incorporated back into the new sub-base and surface layers. The new runway will also include upgrades over the old one according to aviation engineering firm Jviation, the lead firm on the project.
