Relax at the Lake Austin Spa Resort
The Lake Austin Spa Resort is located in a private and secluded valley next to the Colorado River. It boasts 40 guest rooms, a wellness spa, and plenty of delicious meals to fuel outdoor adventures.
The Lake Austin Spa Resort began life as the Lake Austin Lodges. It was a fishing camp that contained 10 rooms and 36 boat slips. Guests enjoyed boating, fishing, waterskiing, swimming, and hiking. They could also hunt turkeys and deer. In the evenings, guests of the lodge and boating non-guests could come up on shore and enjoy a night of drinking, dancing, dinner, snacks, and live entertainment. The hospitality and welcoming atmosphere of the lodge ensured its success for decades.
By the 1970s, the lodge was ready for new owners, and the Sunshine Nudist Camp answered the call. They thought the secluded valley location and outdoor activities would attract lots of nudist patrons. Unfortunately, they quickly found out that the winter temperatures in Austin weren’t compatible with their clothing-free lifestyle.
Thankfully, the vacation spot experienced a renewed life when it was purchased by the Steiner Rodeo Ranch. It became a camp to train rodeo riders and clowns from all over the country, but by 1978, the Ranch was again ready for a new owner with a new vision.
In 1978, the Steiner Rodeo Ranch Camp became The Bermuda Inn, Reducing Resort, a camp for health, wellness, and weight loss. The Bermuda Inn, Reducing Resort embarked on extensive renovations to the facilities and added an additional 10 rooms. The reducing resort patrons were fed calorie-controlled diets and given trophies for achieving certain weight loss milestones.
Unfortunately, by the 1980s, new research was emerging about the harms of severely restrictive diets. That meant it was time for another business makeover, and The Bermuda Inn, Reducing Resort became the Lake Austin Resort. Under the new business model, guests of the resort were taught how to make healthy lifestyle choices and increase their activity levels to maintain a healthy weight.
In 1994, the resort was renamed to include the word ‘spa,’ and by 1997, two friends, Michael McAdams and William Rucks, became interested in the property and purchased it. The two friends then turned the Lake Austin Spa Resort into the luxury health and wellness vacation spot that it is today.
