Getting to Sugarloaf Via the Sugarloaf Regional Airport (B21)

If you have your own airplane, you might want to consider flying into Sugarloaf Regional Airport, which is located 6.7 miles east of Sugarloaf Mountain and 1 mile north of Carrabassett Valley, ME. The airport is open to the public. It sits at an elevation of 880 feet, and it has one runway. Runway 17/35 is 2,797 feet long and 75 feet wide. It is a paved runway that’s considered to be in good condition. There is no tower. The CTAF/UNICOM frequency is 122.8, and the airport has 100LL and Mogas available. It is possible to call for a taxi from the airport.

Lodging at Sugarloaf Mountain

There are plenty of places to stay at Sugarloaf Mountain Resort. One of the most popular places is the Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel. As you drive up, you’ll notice the valet parking, which makes checking in and getting settled a breeze. The hotel boasts a 30-person hot tub where you can warm up after a day of skiing, a fitness center, and a free shuttle service that can help get you where you need to go. The hotel also offers wireless Internet service and an onsite restaurant that serves breakfast and dinner.

In addition to the Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel, the resort also offers vacation rentals. Guests can choose to rent a private home or condo or stay in the Gondola Village. Gondola Village is within walking distance to the Whiffletree chairlift, and guests can enjoy all of the village’s amenities, including shops, restaurants, and the Base Lodge.

Sugarloaf Mountain Winter Adventures

Sugarloaf Mountain offers plenty of activities, including Nordic skiing, alpine skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice skating, and fat biking.

Nordic Skiing

Nordic skiing is cross-country skiing, and Sugarloaf Mountain has more than 31,000 miles of scenic Nordic ski trails. In fact, you might be surprised to find out that Sugarloaf Mountain has the largest Nordic center. Patrons can enjoy the cross-country ski trails from 9 AM until 5 PM daily.

Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding

If your dream is to ski or snowboard, you’ll be pleased to know that most of the lifts begin operating at 8:30 AM. However, there may be some exceptions due to poor weather conditions. It’s also important to note that some lifts may have different operating hours than the main resort ski lifts. However, once the lifts begin operation for the day, you’ll be able to explore the 1,298 acres and 173 groomed trails.

Snowshoeing

Enjoy snowshoeing at Sugarloaf Mountain. They offer trail tickets and snowshoe rental tickets at The Outdoor Center. Individuals can enjoy exploring miles of snowshoeing trails from 9 AM until 5 PM. Additionally, they offer guided Snowshoe Safari Tours from 5 PM until 7 PM.

Ice Skating

Ice skating is available via an outdoor rink from December through mid-March at The Outdoor Center. Skate rentals and lessons for kids and adults are available. They also offer a family skate night every Saturday from 5 PM until 7 PM.

Fat Biking

Sugarloaf Mountain Resort offers fat biking. The Outdoor Center has several miles of groomed fat biking trails, including Narrow Gauge Spur, Snowbrook, and Narrow Gauge Pathway.

Places to Eat on the Mountain

There are lots of places to eat on Sugarloaf Mountain. The Sugarloaf Lodge is home to 45 North, where guests can grab breakfast or dinner. The mountain is also home to:

  • Windowmaker—The Widowmaker is located at Base Lodge and serves lunch and dinner. Favorites include buffalo wings, street corn dip, nachos, wraps and bowls, chicken tenders, burgers, and sandwiches.
  • Bullwinkle’s – Bullwinkle’s is a full bar and restaurant. It’s located at the Mid Mountain Ski In and Ski Out. They serve elote corn dip, crab dip, corn fritters, chicken wings, chicken sandwiches, burgers and sliders.
  • Narrow Gauge Food Court—The Narrow Gauge Food Court is located at Base Lodge. It serves breakfast favorites like two eggs with toast and potatoes, cinnamon buns, and egg sandwiches. For lunch, guests can choose from grilled cheese baskets, macaroni and cheese, chicken sandwiches, fries, and soups. It also offers a grab-and-go bar.
  • Bull Moose Cafe—Guests who happen to be near The Outdoor Center might want to check out the Bull Moose Cafe. It offers hot beverages and jacket potatoes with a variety of toppings, sandwiches, salads, and quesadillas.
  • D’Elles—D’Elles at Sugarloaf serves delicious food with fresh ingredients. It offers panini sandwiches, salads, breakfast sandwiches, hot and cold lunchmeat sandwiches, and soup.
  • The Bag and Kettle – The Bag and Kettle serves burgers, fries, and beer.

Sugarloaf Mountain is the tallest skiable mountain in Maine, with a peak of 4,237 feet. Fly in to the Sugarloaf Regional Airport and stay for a weekend or a week of skiing, fat biking and snowshoeing. By the end of your stay, you’ll be calling yourself a sugarloafer.
