JACKSON HOLE AIRPORT RUNWAY PROJECT UPDATE

We first notified readers in September of the upcoming closure of the runway at Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) in Jackson, Wyoming, for reconstruction and here we provide an update on the 3-Phase project. Phase 1 was completed in October and included the installation of drainage, paving runway safety areas, and staging of construction materials for the remainder of the project.

Phase 2 includes the 78-day closure of the only runway at JAC and will take place from April 11 to June 27, 2022. No flight operations will be conducted at JAC or Jackson Hole Aviation during this time, however, the Teton Interagency Helibase utilized by the National Park and National Forest Services will be operational. During this phase, the entire runway will be excavated and a new subbase laid down. Portions of Taxiways A1, A2, and A4 will also be rebuilt. Airport engineers have estimated that 90-95% of the excavated material will be re-used, minimizing truck traffic and the overall cost of the project. Crews will work 24/7 to accomplish an on-time finish, and air service will resume on June 28, 2022. The 30-day Phase 3 will begin in July for grooving and striping the runway and taxiways and will be completed by August 2022. The airport will be open to aircraft as this work will be conducted at night. The entire $38.8 million cost of the project is being funded through FAA Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants.
