LEX Awarded for Runway Rehabilitation Project
KY – The Blue Grass Airport (KLEX) is one of six recipients of the 2022 Airport Business Projects of the Year award from Airport Business Magazine for the airport’s Runway 4-22 rehabilitation project. LEX was named as the winner in the Airfield category for the $16.2 million project. The runway rehabilitation project led to the paving of the airport’s 7,000-foot main runway with a 72-hour closure last August.
Airports normally schedule pavement rehabilitation every 10 to 15 years, with the process typically lasting for several months. LEX, however, completed the pavement project over one weekend to minimize disruptions to passengers. The expedited process also allowed for a more continuously paved runway which will help to extend the lifespan of the pavement, reduce maintenance needs, and will also improve safety. According to the airport, the peak of the project involved up to 300 construction crew members along with 100 other personnel dedicated to the project. The airport employed advance planning and contingency measures to finish the project within a 72-hour window, which it completed on schedule at the end of August.
