McKinney Airport Expansion Proposal

TX – McKinney will host its first open house for residents to view the environmental study of the proposed commercial air service terminal at McKinney National Airport on Thursday. A $200 million bond item to fund improvements and projects at McKinney National Airport (TKI), including the new commercial air service terminal building, will be on the ballot in May.

Collin County is the third largest county in the Dallas-Fort Worth combined statistical area. According to the market analysis, it is expected to have the most significant population growth in the region through 2040, adding 620,000 people. Of the existing population in Collin County, 42% have an average household income greater than or equal to $100,000 annually. “This is considerably higher than the 26% of households for the whole of the Dallas-Fort Worth CSA and 22% of households at the national level,” according to the market analysis. “Generally, regions with large populations, high levels of employment, and high levels of income indicate the region’s ability to support strong passenger demand and consistent air service.”

Analysis: 1.1 million passengers to be closer to TKI by at least 10 minutes. The market analysis studied catchment data to estimate demand for the commercial terminal. A catchment is an area from which an airport can expect passengers. According to the market analysis, the TKI catchment areas had 2.2 million local domestic passengers in 2019. DFW International Airport and Dallas Love Field Airport had 19 million local domestic passengers in 2019, meaning TKI passengers made up about 11.48% of local domestic passengers at the two airports.

Economic impact: about 3,000 new jobs, no anticipated increase in property taxes. The commercial terminal is anticipated to bring from 2,780 to 3,280 jobs to the region, $207 million to $265 million in wages, $615 million to $850 million in economic output, and $77 million to $115 million in taxes benefitting local, state and federal governments, according to the McKinney National Airport Economic Impact Study from October 2022.
