Multiphase Hangar Project Coming Online at Virginia Airport
The Winchester Regional Airport (OKV) near Winchester, Virginia, is on a building spree thanks to a public-private partnership and will soon open the first set of six hangars to house mid-size aircraft. This represents the first stage of an 11-unit hangar facility which, in turn, is the initial phase of an overall more extensive set of projects that will also include replacing the airport’s terminal built in 1989.
The partnership is between the airport authority and TMG Construction Corporation, a design-build firm based in Purcellville, Virginia. The scope of the projects is anticipated to include as many as 32 new hangar units and cost up to $20 million over the next six years. Airport management notes its decision to form the partnership represents the most cost-effective way to bring multiple hangars to the airport on a rapid timeline. The additional hangars will also help relieve a strong demand in the region and enhance the airport’s attractiveness to businesses, especially those with government contracts. Funding for the projects comes from a $3 million loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In addition, a $4.1 million grant from the Virginia Department of Aviation is earmarked for replacing the 9,245 SF terminal with a 16,000 SF building that will include leasable office spaces and a community access room.
