New Hangar Opens at Hickory Airport
NC – Hickory Regional Airport (HKY) in Hickory, North Carolina, announced the opening of a $1.5 million, 12,000 SF hangar that will house up to four mid-size business jets. Officials from the City of Hickory and Burke County celebrated the unveiling in late June while also announcing that construction will begin on another hangar later this year.
The airport has seen a growth in demand and is responding with plans to accommodate that demand. The airport will close its shorter runway 1/19 to make way for additional hangars including at least 12 T-hangars to house smaller aircraft that will then free up space in the larger hangars. The airport also plans to lengthen the primary runway 6/24 from 6,400 feet to 7,000 feet to accommodate larger business jets to attract more businesses to the area as well as to the airport itself. Airport management says part of its long-term strategic plan is to position the airport to make it more attractive to business and thereby enhance economic activity in the region.
