The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced it screened 1 million passengers on Sunday, Oct. 18, the first time it has hit that threshold since March 17. The TSA also announced it screened 6.1 million passengers nationwide during the week of Oct. 12 to Oct. 18, the highest weekly screening total since the start of the pandemic. Several days in April of this year recording screening levels under 100,000 people. The increasing numbers could be short-lived as COVID-19 cases continue to spike across the U.S. Since the pandemic began, 2,134 TSA employees have contacted COVID-19. Eight have died.

Defense Dept. Study Finds Low COVID-19 Risk in Commercial Flights

A study by the U.S. Department of Defense has found a low risk of contracting the coronavirus on a packed commercial flight. While the study has some limitations, it shows that because of how air is filtered and circulated on commercial airliners, very little of the virus spreads when passengers continuously wear surgical masks. The research found that a plane’s air filtering system removes the virus 15 times faster than in a typical home and five to six times faster than what is recommended for hospital operating rooms. The study did not examine the risk posed when people eat or talk, which raises the possibility of spreading larger droplets. It also did not study the risk of catching the disease while waiting to board a plane or getting to the airport. The Defense Department called the results encouraging.

Industry Trade Groups Urge Congress to Take Action

In a letter to Congress, a dozen airline industry trade groups and unions urged the leaders of the House and Senate to reconcile their differences and pass an aid package to assist the industry. The letter stated, "There continues to be strong, broad, and bipartisan willingness to protect jobs and livelihoods in the airline industry by extending the successful Payroll Support Program (PSP), which was part of the CARES Act." American Airlines furloughed 19,000 workers and United Airlines furloughed 13,000 when the original Payroll Support Program expired on Sept. 30.

EU Announces it is Close to Approving 737 Max

Boeing appears to be closer to getting regulatory approval that will allow the grounded 737 Max to take to the skies again. The EU Aviation Safety Agency announced it is close to approving the airliner for use in Europe. Final approval from the EU is more than a month away. The FAA recently published a draft of proposed pilot training for the plane. It is one of more than a half-dozen steps Boeing will have to complete before the plane gets FAA approval. As most of the grounded planes are owned by foreign airlines, Boeing will also need to receive approval from aviation regulators from countries around world before the 737 Max is fully cleared for worldwide use. The plane had been Boeing’s bestselling commercial jet before it was grounded.

Study Looks at Future Needs at Cleveland Airport

A $4.5 million master plan study is looking into the short- and long-terms needs of Cleveland’s Hopkins International Airport. Because of the pandemic, the study is using virtual tools to allow public input. When completed, the master plan will identify the needs of the airport over the next 20 years. Major topics covered by the study include finalizing a design to boost efficiencies in aircraft movement and passenger handling. An airport redesign is also slated for release in 2021.

The Corpus Christi, TX, city council announced plans to repair and replace the paved aprons at Corpus Christi International Airport. The $11.2 million project will be paid in part by a $8.46 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration. Additional funds are coming from the city’s Airport Capital Improvement Programs Grants Fund. The current apron pavement is cracked and degraded. It covers about 161,000 square yards and is more than 20 years old. The current aprons were not designed for heavier aircraft and equipment loads.

Orlando Airports to Cut Workforce

In an effort to cut $3.3 million in payroll expenses, the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) will offer employees voluntary separations. Voluntary separations will be offered to GOAA employees at Orlando International Airport and Orlando Executive Airport. The program will begin Dec. 4. Separations will be completed by Jan 31, 2021. Orlando International Airport is seeing a rebound in air traffic, yet the Central Florida economy continues to struggle as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

New Phone APP Looks to Streamline COVID-19 Compliance

The Swiss public-interest group Commons Project Foundation recently started testing a smartphone app it developed that could help international airline passenger show they are in compliance with the COVID-19 testing requirements of their destination country. There is currently a patchwork of COVID-19 health requirements around the world. The app was developed as part of the CommonPass project in cooperation with the Swiss World Economic Forum. The CommonPass project seeks to establish a standard way to verify lab results and vaccination records. The Commons Project Foundation recently tested the app on a United Airlines flight from London’s Heathrow airport to Liberty International Airport in Newark, NJ. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency and the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention observed the test.

Chamber Backs Funding for Paducah, KY, Airport Project

A new airport terminal project at Barkley Regional Airport has received the support of the Paducah, KY, Chamber of Commerce. The chamber recently announced its support of $15.5 million in federal funding in 2021 and $2 million in 2022 to complete the project. The groundbreaking for the terminal project is Nov. 6. Building the new terminal has been a priority for decades at the airport. The terminal project is the first phase of an airport revitalization program.

Patriot Missile Battery Appears at Local Airport

Seemingly overnight, an Army Patriot air defense missile battery appeared at Easterwood Airport in College Station, TX. The battery was from nearby Fort Hood. According to the Fort Hood public affairs office, the missile battery is part of the 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade at the Army post. It is part of an exercise to allow soldier to set up and run the installation in an unfamiliar location, much like they would do during a crisis. It also allowed ROTC cadets from Texas A&M University to take part in the exercise. No live missiles were used in the deployment.
