Airliner Hits Bear in Alaska
An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-300 aircraft hit a brown bear while landing at Yakutat Airport in Alaska, damaging the airliner’s left engine cowl and killing the bear. No injuries were reported. In 1987, an Alaska Airlines plane departing from Juneau hit a large fish that was dropped by an eagle.
Boeing 737 Max Cleared for Flight by FAA
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has cleared the Boeing 737 Max to resume flying. Boeing received the clearance after making changes to the plane’s design, software and crew training. U.S. airlines must receive FAA approval of their pilot training procedures before putting the aircraft back in service.
Tulsa International Airport Outlines $48.2 Million Capital Improvement Plan
The Tulsa Airports Improvement Trust (TAIT) is reviewing a five-year, $48.2 million capital improvement plan for Tulsa International Airport. Plans calls for new snow-removal equipment, road repairs, runway upgrades and building repairs. The trustees also accepted a $4.29 million improvement plan for R.L. Jones Jr. Riverside Airport.
Redevelopment Approved for John C. Tune Airport in Nashville
The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority Board of Commissioners has approved a $43.5 million plan to upgrade and expand John C. Tune Airport in West Nashville, TN. It includes construction of plane ports, box hangars, grading, paving and building a maintenance facility.
Group Proposes Major Cargo Project at Alaska Airport
The C Change Group has released a proposal to build facilities to support the growing air cargo industry at Alaska’s Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. The proposal could be worth up to $500 million and includes building 14 fuel and electricity hardstands. FedEx and UPS are expanding their operations at the airport as well.
Midway Airport Introduces Touchless Security
Midway International Airport in Chicago is the latest airport to introduce touchless security screening technology from the biometric data company CLEAR. The technology replaces the need for traditional identification by using double-encrypted biometric markers. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has tested and certified the technology.

Santa Clara County Considers Airport Closure
Supervisors in Santa Clara County, CA, have voted to potentially close Reid-Hillview Airport in East San Jose. Potential uses for the 180-acre airport include affordable housing, office and retail space and recreation. Legal commitments require the airport to remain open until 2031.
Airport COVID-19 Screening Program Deemed Ineffective
A new report from the Centers for Disease Control found that the recent CDC COVID-19 airport screening program was ineffective. The program ran from January to September and screened more than 766,000 passengers. Nine passengers tested positive for COVID-19.
Wisconsin Airport Investigating Facility Improvements
The Chippewa Valley Regional Airport Commission in Eau Claire, WI, is considering seeking Department of Transportation and state funds for airport improvements, including constructing new hangars. Some residents are opposed to the new hangars and using $2.5 million from a CARES Act grant to build them.
Melfa Airport Hangar Funding Vetoed by Virginia Governor
Virginia Governor Ralph Northam has vetoed plans to provide $1 million to construct a hangar at Melfa Airport. The hangar would have supported overflow aircraft traffic from NASA’s nearby Wallops Flight Facility. In March the governor froze all new spending in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Airline Employment Continues to Fall
As a result of the pandemic, airlines will cut nearly 90,000 jobs by the end of the year, leaving a workforce of about 370,000 people reports the trade group Airlines for America. The industry had employed 460,000 people in March of this year. The airline industry has been urging Congress to pass a $25 billion federal aid package to preserve jobs.
