Legislation Introduced to Subsidize Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production
U.S. Reps. Brad Schneider (D-IL), Dan Kildee (D-MI), and Julia Brownlee (D-CA) on May 20 introduced the Sustainable Skies Act, which would establish a blender’s tax credit for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) that demonstrate at least a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over their lifecycle. The intent is to encourage SAF production and utilization to help enable the U.S. airline industry to achieve its goal of eliminating net carbon emissions by 2050 while maintaining energy security and jobs.
Current blends of SAF reduce carbon emissions by 80% compared to standard jet fuels but are three times as expensive and only available in limited quantities. The legislation provides for a $1.50 - $2.00 per gallon tax credit for blenders, which will increase from $1.50 by one cent for each percentage of lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions savings above the 50% minimum to further incentivize SAF development and deployment.
The legislation is supported by Airlines for America (A4A), the the National Air Transportation Association (NATA) and the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA).

Encouraging Signs For AirVenture
As Covid cases decline in the U.S. and most of the rest of the world, some positive news comes from EAA: With advance ticket sales and vendors approaching 2019 numbers and the peak sales period just around the corner, AirVenture may look more like 2019 than people were anticipating, EAA reported to AVweb.
EAA will implement some precautions such as reduced seating and duplicating some events to spread out attendance. However no physical distancing or masking requirements will be imposed or enforced on the grounds, but both are recommended for those who are unvaccinated. Some vendors may require folks to mask up while inside their displays, but that decision is being left up to the exhibitors.
Vendor interest is down slightly from 2019 at about 700 exhibitors compared with the typical 800, which may be due to international travel restrictions limiting offshore attendance. Two separate airshow boxes will be in use with performers flying at the same time to spread attendees out along the flight line. Exhibit hangars will have wider aisles, increased ventilation, and more dispersed exhibits.
