| Southwest Wyoming Regional Airport (KRKS) Joins HangarNetwork |
Last month, the Southwest Wyoming Regional Airport (RKS, in photo above) in Rock Springs, Wyoming, became the latest airport to enlist HangarNetwork's services to market its hangar space and land for future development. As we do for all new airport accounts, this article describes the airport's background and summarizes its current state of facilities, operations, and available properties.
In the years following the end of World War I, civilian interest in aviation was exploding around the country and the world. After having been a very important factor in the war effort, civilians became fanatic about flying as well. Flying fever was rampant all over, spurred on by numerous barnstorming exhibitions and famous pilots such as Charles A. Lindbergh's solo trans-Atlantic flight and Amelia Earhart's exploits. Earhart made a stop in Rock Springs in 1931 during a transcontinental flight in a gyroplane.
However, the two elements that generated the greatest excitement among the general public were the development of airmail service and air races.
To celebrate the first anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that brought World War I to its conclusion, a seven-week series of air races was held in 1919. The racers flew from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific and back with numerous stops along the way, with one of the stops being Rock Springs. This of course brought a huge amount of excitement to the town, where several locals already owned and flew planes in the area. According to local history, a landing strip was cleared on the cliffs above the Green River about ten miles southwest of town and this was where the air race pilots made their stop.
RKS began its life as the Rock Springs Air Mail Station in the early 1920s. It was located near the present-day site of the Sweetwater Events Center and fairgrounds, and it was here that Earhart made her stop in her Pitcairn-Cierva PCA-2 autogiro during a publicity tour in 1931. This tour brought the flying capabilities of the autogiro to the public for the first time.
In 1942 the airport was relocated to its present site about seven miles east of the city. Originally it consisted of two landing strips, Runway 12/30 and Runway 3/21, and Runway 7/25 was added later.
Subsequent improvements included the addition of new taxiways and apron areas, the construction of the passenger and general aviation terminals, and the construction of Runway 9/27 with the decommissioning of Runways 7/25 and 12/30.
In 1969 Rock Springs entered into a joint-ownership agreement with Sweetwater County and formed the Joint Powers Board which manages the airport. The airport then became known as the Rock Springs-Sweetwater County Airport, which, to emphasize a regional operations and marketing strategic initiative, was renamed again in February 2018 to the Southwest Wyoming Regional Airport.
RKS is non-towered and mentioned above, the current layout consists of two runways: Runway 9/27 is 10,000' x 150' grooved asphalt, and Runway 3/21 is 5,228' x 75' asphalt with porous friction courses. Runway 9/27 has several instrument approach procedures.
There are presently 44 aircraft based at RKS, distributed among 35 single engine, 5 multi engine, one helicopter, and three ultralight.
RKS averages 46 aircraft operations daily, with 59% transient general aviation, 27% air taxi, and 14% local GA. Passenger service via SkyWest Airlines at RKS was listed in the 2015 Master Plan at 6 arrivals and 6 departures per day to and from Denver, Salt Lake City, and Gillette. It has since diminished to its current level of two flights per day to and from Denver, comprising less than 1% of total operations.
However, recent passenger numbers have shown sustained growth from 2017 through early 2019, increasing 12% and 32% year over year in 2017 and 2018 respectively. In January and February of 2019 the growth trend continued with traffic up 33.8% over the same period in 2018.
The present passenger terminal was built in 1982, and houses the airport administrative offices, TSA facility, and two rental car companies. A remodel and/or expansion of the terminal is under consideration.
Sweetwater Aviation, an AvFuel-branded full-service FBO providing Jet-A and 100LL, has a newly-built 24,750 square foot terminal and passenger lounge with amenities such as a dedicated pilot lounge and snooze room, workout facility, golf simulator, conference room, and office space.
RKS currently has 25,000 square feet of transient hangar space able to accommodate up to a G650 and Global Express aircraft. Rates are based upon aircraft size and length of stay.

HAPPY ADS-B DAY!
As you're well aware, the FAA mandate for ADS-B equipment is now in effect. If you did not equip, you are prohibited from entering airspace where ADS-B is required, which is essentially anywhere a transponder is required.
However, an article in the December AOPA Pilot describes an FAA web tool that permits, for a limited time, pilots flying without ADS-B who need access to rule airspace to request a deviation authorization at least one hour but not more than 24 hours prior to the requested entry.
