We are all aware of how extremely difficult the past eight weeks have been since the economic shutdown began and the crushing impact these circumstances have had on our friends and colleagues in the aviation industry. All segments - not just the commercial carriers but business and general aviation have been hard hit by social distancing and the plunge in air travel across all areas - business, personal, and tourism. FBOs and flight schools that rent airplanes have also been adversely affected by state and local limitations on flight operations, in some cases due to unclear directives being issued by local government officials regarding what constitutes "critical" services.
Even the venerable EAA AirVenture at Oshkosh was canceled last week as the continuing uncertainty surrounding the covid-19 situation prevented timely planning and preparation of the grounds, which was to have begun May 1. This was not unexpected but still a sad yet probably prudent decision. Prudent in the context that pilots and aviation enthusiasts travel in from all parts of the globe to gawk at and admire their favorite airplanes, enjoy the flight demos, and drool over the latest gear and accessories. All while mingling with 600,000 or more like-minded folks who, when it is over, all get to return home potentially transporting an unseen stowaway to perpetuate the cycle of illness.
Be that as it may there is a proverbial light at the end of the tunnel, as many governors across the country are beginning to relax their states' stay-at-home recommendations, giving businesses the green light to open their doors and getting some people back to work. Corporate flight departments, charter operators, and fractionals are dusting off their aircraft and firing up the engines as business travel slowly starts to get moving again.
We want you to know that through all of this, your needs have remained paramount. We emphasize to our customers, whether airport operators, aircraft and hangar owners/lessors, and real estate agents or brokers, that HangarNetwork provides you the best online exposure available for your airport/aviation property and superior customer service during these challenging times. This is reflected by the uptick in aviation property activity from mid-March through April, when 16 new hangar listings became available, up from 11 the prior two months.
Regarding our website we are very results-oriented, and it shows as our industry-leading site continues to firmly outperform others in the same space. Over the past six months the site experienced an average 9,100 sessions generating 35,500 page-views per month, representing a 9.6% growth over the previous six months. Each session represents a unique visitor using the site, and the average session duration was 2:18 with 4 pages viewed. New users accounted for 89.5% of all users, and an impressive 68.2% of those were acquired via organic search. Organic search is defined as users who perform a search engine query on specific terms or phrases such as airport land, aircraft hangar, or hangar for lease.
Search engines are designed to scan the descriptive parts of a website's code and determine to what extent that description matches its actual content. The better the match, the higher the site will rank in the search engine. Using such rankings, search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing, and others serve up websites that best match whatever term or phrase the internet user is searching for. Our site continues to place on page 1 of most of the search engine result pages. This provides evidence our website is very relevant and useful to users - and popular - among those searching for hangars, offices, or airport land.
Banner advertisers on our website have also been pleased, since the site generates nearly 20,000 ad impressions per month, depending on the specific ad placement. Ad impressions are the number of times an ad appears on the screen to a user. In addition to the banner ads, we have two other advertising channels which have been used to great effect over the past six months. These are our targeted email blasts and eNewsletter advertising.
Since November 2019 we've distributed 5 targeted email blasts for airports including Spinks, Meacham, Felts Field, and San Martin. They are highly visible and very effective for generating publicity and distribution of RFPs (Requests For Proposals) for airport land or facility development. These emails are sent specifically to our broker & developer network contacts and have produced an average 27% open rate, well above the industry standard 15% (open rate equals the number of people opening the email divided by the number of emails sent).
The eNewsletter advertising has been effective as well, considering the open rate for the monthly edition (what you are reading now) also outperforms the industry standard by 23% to 15%.
A couple of months ago we began offering a new ad placement for this edition, and we're calling it the sidebar article. The sidebar article is available for $200, is larger and contains more detail and photos than the normal ad placement, which is also still available. You can see an example to the right of this article describing the RFP for San Martin Airport (E16) in San Martin, California.
