The National Air Transportation Association (NATA) recently toured seven regional airports in Colorado. It's the first tour of its newly launched General Aviation Advancing America campaign. As part of the tour, NATA conducted focus groups in four communities with community leaders and aviation stakeholders. The initiative highlights the importance of rural airports to economic development, job recovery and emergency response. For more information click here.

 

The White House is looking into taking action to prevent job losses in the airline industry. Without action from the White House or Congress, thousands of jobs may be lost this month in the airline industry. American Airlines has announced plans to furlough 17,500 flight attendants and pilots and 1,500 management and support staff in October. The International Air Transport Association predicts it will take until 2024 for air travel to return to pre-pandemic levels. Click here for full details.

 

The business aviation sector recovered to about 83 percent of normal levels in July in the North American market. It's an increase of about 300 percent from its low point in April soon after the start of the economic shutdown resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. The recovery is mainly the result of an increase in leisure travel for those who choose to fly privately rather than on public airlines. Growing another 15 to 20 percent is expected to prove difficult, as demand for business travel remains low. The full article is available here.

 

Detroit announced plans to commit $60 million to $80 million to revitalize Coleman A. Young Municipal Airport. The general aviation airport is located near the center of the city. Funding will be provided by state and FAA Airport Improvement Program funding. The goal is to have the airport become self-sustaining. It currently relies on about $2 million a year in city funding to operate. The airport's infrastructure has deteriorated over the past decades as a result of financial insecurity. More here.

 

The U.S. Department of Transportation will prohibit charter flights between the U.S. and Cuba beginning Oct. 13. Public charters to and from Havana, emergency medical flights, search and rescue and other travel deemed to be in the interest of the United States are exempt from the ban. No reason was given for the ban. Parties have until Sept. 3 to file objections. The entire article is available here.

 

The National Air Transportation Association (NATA) has created a General Aviation Airports Committee to assist with policy priorities and advocacy efforts. The committee with address a range of issues including landlord/tenant relations, hangar development, lease agreements, airport revenues, minimum standards and Covid-19 concerns. NATA's membership includes more than 300 general aviation airports and over 100 airport-sponsored FBOs. More information is available here.

 

 

Medaire is providing Covid-19 testing and tracking services to flight crews, company personnel and passengers. Testing, which includes FDA-authorized saliva collections tests, can be self-administered via a Zoom video call. Results are typically provided within 24 to 48 hours. Medaire states the HIPPA-compliant tests are as effective as nasal swab tests. More information here.
