PHOENIX-MESA GATEWAY AIRPORT REACHES NEW HEIGHTS WITH TOWER CONSTRUCTION
The Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport has reached a milestone on the path to completing construction of a new air traffic control tower with the addition of a cab to the tower structure. The renovation serves as a component of an updated airport master plan designed to assist growth over the next two decades. The existing tower was constructed in 1970 and the height of the tower along with the size of the original cab have been outpaced by increased activity at the airport. Construction on the tower began in November 2020 and is expected to continue for one more year.
At 65 feet taller than the original tower, the airport’s new structure will stand at 190 feet upon completion to provide controllers with unobstructed views. The new cab will also provide occupants with twice the space afforded in the original construction. With the recent addition of the steel cab structure, the tower has reached a height of 174 feet. Interior construction including electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work within the cab will occur throughout the next year to help advance the tower toward operational status.
