Port of South Louisiana Building More T-Hangars
LA – The Port of South Louisiana Executive Regional Airport (APS) sits alongside the Mississippi River roughly halfway between New Orleans and Baton Rouge in Reserve, Louisiana. The Port is one of the largest tonnage port districts in the U.S., and the airport’s business travel and general aviation operations complement the maritime and rail transfer and storage services supported by the Port’s 54 miles of industrial facilities along the river.
In 2018 after seeing the success of an 8,000 SF transient hangar built in 2017, Port officials began construction of 10 T-hangars to serve as rentals for local aircraft owners to attract more tenants and businesses. While announcing plans for the hangars the airport issued a survey to assess the level of interest and surprisingly learned that 24 individuals wanted to rent hangars, meaning that all 10 T-hangars would be leased before they were even built. As soon as the hangars were completed and operational, the airport immediately began to seek funding to build an additional 10 T-hangars directly across the ramp from the original ones. Construction began earlier this year, with about a third of the $1.8 million cost covered by a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration. This second batch of hangars, like the first, are nested T-hangars of varying sizes built to accommodate up to mid-size singles and twins such as the Cessna 340, Beechcraft 55 Baron, and the Daher TBM 900. Airport officials are considering plans for future upgrades and expansion such as building additional larger corporate hangars and lengthening the runway.
