Provo Airport Experiencing Rapid Growth 

UT – The brand-new Provo airport opened this past summer and is already at capacity. Since opening in July, Provo Airport has had more than 300,00 passengers pass through. By the end of 2023, it would reach close to 800,000 passengers (almost half the population of Idaho). Convenience is a key attraction causing passengers to fly out of Provo instead of Salt Lake City. According to airport research, 30% of the passengers who fly out of Provo come from outside Utah County. 

Allegiant and Breeze are the two airlines that fly commercially out of Provo Airport. More airlines, as well as new routes, are being discussed. Morning and evening schedules remain very busy, and the airport is looking to continue its growth. Because of that expected future growth, Provo City leaders are already looking to expand the terminal much faster than initially thought when the new airport was first designed.  

There are currently four gates inside Provo Airport, which could be expanded to 10 gates. Initial estimates for further expansion are in the $62 million range. Provo City leaders are looking for federal funding to help with costs. In addition, Provo Airport is now seeking funding to add more flights, bring in new airlines and become an international airport. That would make this the second international airport in the state, after Salt Lake International, which has been the sole means of air travel for many Utahns for years. 

Provo Airport won’t attempt to reach the size of Salt Lake International and will instead focus on becoming a strong regional option. As a result, people choosing to fly out of Provo enjoy a faster and more convenient experience, with the time from leaving your car to arriving at the gate as low as ten minutes.
