PUBLIC COMMENT ENCOURAGED DURING SOUTHERN NEVADA SUPPLEMENTAL AIRPORT PLANNING

The Clark County Department of Aviation (CCDOA) has resumed planning for the proposed Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport (SNSA) and recently requested community input during meetings scheduled to address ground transportation options. Initial planning for the SNSA began in the early 2000s and is expected to continue through 2024. Upon completion of the planning study, the SNSA project will be analyzed via an environmental impact statement guided by the FAA and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) prior to the beginning of airport construction.

The SNSA is intended to provide relief for aviation traffic at LAS as tourism in the area is expected to rebound amidst the pandemic. The airport will be located 23 miles south of Las Vegas on 6,000 acres of undeveloped federal land. If the CCDOA receives FAA and BLM construction approval, the county will also be authorized to acquire an additional 17,000 acres of land to serve as a compatibility buffer. Planning studies related to SNSA development include the revision of aviation activity forecasts, exploration of ground transport options, passenger characteristic identification, and the assessment of environmental challenges. The CCDOA is encouraging public comment that will be accepted through November 5, 2021.
