RUNWAY WORK BEGINS AT NEW KENTUCKY AIRPORT

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awarded $7.9 million to Kentucky for its newest airport still under construction, Gallatin Airport in Sparta, Kentucky. The grant funds will be used to pave and mark the 5,000-foot primary runway, 1,800 feet of taxiways, 75,000 square yards of terminal ramp area, and 3,200 feet of terminal access road.

This represents the third phase in the project, which broke ground in October 2019 to become Kentucky’s 58th general aviation airport, and to serve the I-71 corridor between Louisville and Cincinnati. The project was initially proposed in 2004 so it is long-anticipated and will bring economic growth and better access to recreational activities as well as enhanced emergency response capabilities. There will be a connector road to the I-71 exit 55 as well as an access road, which together will enable better industrial access in the tristate area.

Once hangars have been built it is anticipated that 30-50 aircraft will be based at the airport, and projections indicate an estimated 13,000 operations per year.
