SEVEN AIRPORTS IN ALASKA TO RECEIVE FAA GRANTS TOTALING $42 MILLION

The FAA has invested $42 million toward improving seven additional airports in Alaska and has awarded more than 64 grants during 2021 to airports in the state to expand safety, access, and sustainability efforts. The majority of communities in Alaska are only accessible by air with an estimated 82 percent requiring delivery, transportation, and emergency medical evacuations via air transportation. The newly announced list of airport improvement projects in Alaska fall under the American Rescue Plan Act and will not incur the typically required local match payment.

The Bethel census area will receive $31.5 for improvement projects at Bethel Airport, Chefornak Airport, and Kipnuk Airport. Kenai Municipal Airport will be awarded $506,500 and the Warren “Bud” Woods Palmer Municipal Airport will receive $526,000. An award of $3.1 million will be given to Atqasuk Edward Burnell Sr. Memorial Airport and the Metlakatla Airport will utilize $6.5 million of funding for critical seaplane base repair.
