SFO REDUCES ENERGY CONSUMPTION WITH NZE PLAN

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has released a report indicating progress toward their Zero Net Energy (ZNE) plan to recruit all energy consumption from renewable energy sources at the campus level by 2021. SFO intends to reduce energy consumption to 25 percent below 2013 levels by the end of the 2021 fiscal year. The recent report provided data confirming the airport had reduced energy consumption by nine percent in 2020 which allowed for a reduction of 14 percent below 2013 levels.

The Zero Net Energy plan is expected to reduce the airport’s energy usage by 60 percent on an annual basis and will mark SFO as the first Zero Net Energy airport campus in the world when fully executed. The airport’s five-year plan to support the initiative includes reducing existing building energy use, activation of a campus-wide energy management control system, and incorporation of high-performance energy efficiency strategies in new construction. SFO will also utilize an energy and commissioning management team to ensure performance of the plan. The plan will additionally focus on recovering and reusing energy within the terminal and employing the use of solar power and battery storage.
