WASHINGTON STATE CONSIDERS AIRPORT EXPANSIONS
The Washington Department of Transportation’s Commercial Aviation Coordinating Commission (CACC) has developed a preliminary list of six airports it is considering for expansion. The Phase I report released in December 2020 identified the preliminary sites as Arlington Municipal (AWO), Bremerton National (PWT), Paine Field-Snohomish County (PAE), Sanderson Field (SHN), Tacoma Narrows (TIW), and Ed Carlson Memorial (TDO).
CACC chair David Fleckenstein said, “The list of six potential sites should only be considered preliminary because it only includes existing airports at this time. Additional work needs to be done to identify potential sites that may be more appropriate for a major airport.”
The commission has been working to deliver recommendations by January 2022 on ways to meet the aviation capacity needs of Washington state. These will likely include a new primary commercial aviation facility as well as ways to expand capacity at existing facilities.
