West Virginia Airport in Expansion Mode
WV – Morgantown Municipal Airport (MGW) is the busiest airport in the state. City managers, fully recognizing the potential of the airport, have embarked on the most ambitious and significant economic development project in the city’s history with a multi-phase expansion of the airport and the construction of an adjacent business park.
A major element is the construction of a new 10,000 SF hangar which will be completed in early 2023. Ground Speed Aviation of Fairmont, WV, has leased nearly 50,000 SF of airport land to build the hangar and will sublease it for maintenance operations and aircraft storage. Prior to the hangar construction, ground was broken in March 2021 on the initial phase of a 1,001-foot runway extension to bring its length to 6,200 feet. Land clearing and earth-moving to create an embankment for the runway are nearly completed, with a total of about 3 million cubic yards of material being moved. Construction of the runway extension itself is scheduled to commence this summer. The cost of the project is anticipated to be $50 million over five years and will be partially funded by FAA Airport Improvement Program grants
The runway extension is scheduled to be completed in 2026 and will enlarge the range of aircraft able to use the airport, modernize the facility, enhance safety, and attract new business. The cleared land will be the future site of the I-68 Commerce Park, and its proximity to the airport is intended as an attraction for future businesses.
