Williamsport Regional (IPT) to Receive Infrastructure Funding, Approves Funding for Hangar Design
The Williamsport (PA) Municipal Airport Authority has approved $249,000 for the design of a 20-bay hangar, planned for completion in early 2023. The central Pennsylvania airport is also considering applying for federal funding to renovate its air traffic control tower.
Williamsport Regional is a smaller facility currently without commercial air service. However, the city of Williamsport is noteworthy as the home of Lycoming Engines which since 1929 has and continues to power more than half the world’s general aviation fleet, both rotary and fixed-wing. Lycoming has manufactured over 325,000 piston aircraft engines including the only FAA-certified aerobatic and helicopter piston engines. Airport management was recently notified that it will receive more than $1 million in funding from Pennsylvania for infrastructure improvements. This is in addition to $17 million in CARES Act funding awarded in 2020. The airport has been in extended discussions with Southern Airways Express to return commercial service, which ended with the departure of American Airlines in September 2021.
